Kitchen expediter — first shift
A new kitchen expediter uses KDS to make sure every live order is complete, correct and ready to hand over. Order Hub is only a support tool for an exception; Inventory setup is not part of this role.

First shift: Kitchen Expediter
Which systems should a new kitchen expediter learn?
Start with KDS. Use Order Hub only to look up an exception when a lead asks. Use Leftover Stock only when assigned at closing. Do not change recipes, Sales BOMs, stock balances or production batches.
KDS
What does KDS mean and when do I complete an order?
KDS is the Kitchen Display System. It shows live orders for the kitchen. Complete an order only when every item is correct and the order is ready for handover.
Never complete an order just to clear the queue
Can I complete an old or busy order to remove it from the screen?
No. Completion confirms that the order is ready for handover and can affect downstream records. Keep the ticket number and ask the shift lead if it is missing, wrong or duplicated.
Who can use it
Before you start
- Sign in with your own account and confirm the KDS screen, printer and handover point are ready.
- Ask the shift lead who confirms handover when an order contains drinks or items from another station.
Know the screen
1
KDS order tickets
Your main working screen. Read the order number, items, choices and waiting time before packing.
2
Order Hub — exception lookup
Use only when the lead asks you to check an order number, source or status. Do not use it to clear the kitchen queue.
3
Leftover Stock — end of shift
Use only if the shift lead assigns you to count prepared leftovers after service.
Step by step
1
At the start of service, check the KDS screen is connected and there are no old unresolved tickets.
2
Take the next ticket, read every item and special choice aloud or point it out to the cook.
3
Match finished food to the ticket: item, quantity, option, sauce and packaging must all match.
4
Place the completed order at the agreed handover point, then mark it complete in KDS only when it is ready to leave the kitchen.
5
If something is missing, wrong or duplicated, stop the handover, keep the ticket number and ask the shift lead before changing any status.
6
At closing, record leftovers only if assigned; count the physical food first and enter the actual quantity.
Watch out
- Do not complete an order because it looks old, because a customer is waiting, or because the screen is busy. Completion is the handover confirmation.
- Do not change recipes, sales BOMs, stock balances or production batches. Escalate these issues to the shift lead or Inventory owner.
